The law does not require an applicant to have a SSN to apply for a standard license or non-driver ID.
-
However, the MVC has proposed regulations that would require applicants without a Social Security Number (SSN) who do not have an ITIN to provide a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration (SSA). This requirement is out of reach for most undocumented immigrants in New Jersey.
-
The Let’s Drive NJ coalition is urging the MVC to allow individuals to sign an affidavit to their ineligibility for a SSN rather than go to the federal SSA for a letter of ineligibility.
